The Latin American Community Center’s Minerva Marrero Hispanic Scholarship Program (MMHSP) (formally known as the HSRP), provides monetary scholarships for Hispanic Seniors in the State of Delaware to support their post-high school education and/or vocational opportunities. We are happy to launch this program for the first time this year, though the former program, the Hispanic Student Recognition Program, had been a signature event at the LACC for decades. The goal of the program is to open doors for Hispanic students to pursue greater opportunities, inspire pride in our people and heritage, motivate students to work hard, and encourage families to support them.
Minerva Marrero was very proud of her Puerto Rican heritage, welcoming newcomers to Wilmington’s Latino community. She was one of the founders of the original Hispanic Student Recognition Program, which recognized promising Hispanic High School and Middle School students throughout Delaware. It is an honor to name this program after Minerva Marrero, so that her legacy of advocating for the success of Hispanic students continues each and every day.
Award recipients of the Minerva Marrero Hispanic Scholarship Program will receive funds that are aimed to help finance their associates, bachelors or trade school tuition. Scholarships will be awarded based on three tiers. Tier 1 recipients will be awarded $5,000 Tier 2 recipients will receive $3,000 and Tier 3 recipients will receive $2,000. Recipients are selected based on their academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. Scholarships will be awarded to students in tiers based on the contents of their application package, and demonstrated level of financial need.
The deadline to submit applications and supporting documents is February 24, 2023
